England fans once again prove why they’re the best in the world
In the face of Euro 2020 cup final defeat, England’s band of happy-go-lucky fans once again proved why they’re the envy of the world.
After the match, in which Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties, English fans stayed on the terraces to applaud their plucky opponents and shake hands with rival fans. Many even swapped shirts and took selfies as a carnival-like atmosphere ensued.
Outside Wembley, fans that had been unable to get tickets instead collaborated in creating a pop-up street party with pretty bunting, games for children and row after row of tables groaning with homemade sandwiches, cakes, tasty meat pies and jugs of refreshing lemonade.
In Leicester Square, fans gathered to sing the hymn ‘Jerusalem’ before taking the knee to show solidarity with various anti-racism organisations.
Even on social media, England fans showed why they are the best in the world with members of the England squad receiving nothing but positive, supportive messages throughout the night and into the early hours of Monday morning. Particular praise was lavished on the players that missed penalties with a spokesperson for the Millwall Fan Forum even suggesting that Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka should be knighted.
Celebrations are likely to continue throughout the day and are expected to culminate in a gathering at Trafalgar Square this evening where fans plan to hold a minute’s silence in an attempt to draw much-needed attention to the threat posed by global warming.
